Donald Carl Cross

Services for Donald Carl Cross, 83, of Brownfield will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 2pm at Plains Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.

Donald passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at home. He was born to Elmer and Muriel (Morman) Cross on March 9, 1929 in Flomot, Texas (Motley County). He moved to Plains on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 with his parents. Donald had a horse named Socks that he loved to ride. He was active in scouts, his studies, Band (played alto saxophone), sports and he was a state officer in FAA. He was valedictorian of his class in 1946. He attended Texas A & M and Texas Tech Colleges. He worked at Brownfield State Bank and Trust Company, commuting from Plains, until meeting Frances Gay Price, also an employee at the bank. They married on August 17, 1952 and had three children, Karen, Scott and Mark. Donald continued working for 27 years as a File Clerk, Bookkeeper, Cashier and then as a Vice President and Loan Officer. He was a member as well as an officer of BAI. He traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, New Orleans, Louisiana, St. Louis, Missouri and San Antonio for meetings, while Frances and the other wives were entertained with tours and other activities. After resigning from the bank, Donald worked at SIC, a finance company, as Vice President. He then worked for Haliburton as a Cement Operator, and then for Rip Griffin Oil as a Bookkeeper where he retired. Donald was a 50 year member in the Masonic Lodge, holding several offices. He was past Master Mason of the Plains Lodge where he was a fifty year member. He was also a charter member of the Lubbock Lodge of 32nd Degree Masons and a Cub Scout Master. He was a member of Abundant Harvest Community Church in Brownfield at the time of his death.

He loved his family, and his granddaughters were the delight of his life. He is preceded in death by his parents, and youngest son, Mark.

Donald is survived by his wife, Frances of 59 years, a daughter, Karen Cross of the home, a son Scott Cross and wife Holly of Plains, 6 beautiful granddaughters; Alicia and fiancé Grady Goodson, Amanda and husband Shane Mitchell, Alanna, Cadie, Neely and Kylee; a sister, Lajuana Joy and husband Autry Burke, and their children Cynthia and husband Randy Tidwell and their children and grandchildren, Randy and Jeanette Burke and their children and grandchildren, and Tracy and Lesley Burke and their children.
