Services for Billy Earl Elrod, 77, of Brownfield will be at 10am Friday, November 30, 2012 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Carter officiating. Masonic graveside services will follow in Terry County Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.

There will be a family visitation on Thursday from 5-7pm at Brownfield Funeral Home.

Earl passed away Sunday, November 25, 2012 in Canyon. He was born July 14, 1935 in Gorman to David Obie and Minnie Belle (Browning) Elrod. He graduated from Brownfield High School. He went to school and worked at Fenton’s Shoe Store in Brownfield. He also worked at Cobb’s Department Store and Cliff’s Western Wear. Earl married Wanda “Sue” Decker on August 19, 1955 in Lovington, New Mexico. He then went to work as a fireman for the City of Brownfield in 1960. Earl and his wife started an answering service in 1971 for many businesses in the area. He also had worked at Tim’s Safety Lane. He remained with the fire department until he became the Building Inspector and Civil Defense Coordinator for Brownfield in 1972 until retiring in 1998. In 1976 he traveled with the Spirit of Plains Band. He was the current Building Inspector for the City of Sundown and taught continuing education classes for plumbers. He also worked for Terry County Tractor in Brownfield. Earl was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shrine, a member of Eastern Star and a charter and endowed member of Scottish Rite. He was a reserve Lt. for Brownfield Police Department.

Earl is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sue of Brownfield; two daughters, Connie Bagley and husband Mike of O’Donnell and Debra Crutcher and husband Terry of Brownfield; 2 granddaughters, Brandy Tidwell and husband Billy of Crosbyton and Mandy Pruner and husband Matt of Canyon; 2 great grandsons, Hunter and Jaxen Tidwell of Crosbyton; a sister, Latrell Welch and husband Benny of Stanton; a brother, Kenneth Elrod and wife Jenan of Lakeside, CA. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale Elrod.

The family suggests memorials to Calvary Baptist Church of Brownfield, First Baptist Church of O’Donnell or charity of ones choice.
