George Allen Hudspeth

Graveside services for George Allen Hudspeth, 89,of Brownfield will be 2pm, Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Terry County Memorial Cemetery with John Field officiating. Services will be under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.

George was born January 7, 1921 in Valley View to George Andrew Hudspeth and Norene Walker Hudspeth. He Graduated High School from Altus, OK. While attending college at Oklahoma University, George was the champion wrestler of the light weights. He won many competitions and was finally state champ.

He joined the Army Air Corps, receiving his pilot’s license. George was stationed in California for a while, then transferred to the Reese Air Force base in Lubbock. After Leaving the Army Air Corps, he joined his father farming in Lamesa. They resided there for a short time, and then moved to Brownfield. Granddaddy Hudspeth and “little George” or “Jr.” as he was called, were doing some harvesting for Cecil O’Neal, and the O’Neal’s offered George and Jr. Thanksgiving dinner with their family. At that meal, George met the love of his life, Vona Lee O’neal. With a whirlwind courtship, the two were married three months later on February 24, 1946.

From there George worked farming his land and acquiring more land. He was involved in the local Republican party, His church at the time and his family. Being an only child, George was always willing to help his extended family in time of need. Over time, the family grew. John Allen, Linda Sue and Mary Lee, were his pride and joys.

After he retired from farming, Vona Lee and George were involved in Trailway tours. They saw most of the country, lacking only two states. Granddaddy had a love of auctions, and he would always have his grandson, Andy, in tow with him. His grandchildren were his future as he always said. He had a great love of them. Always concerned and caring for them. He was a wonderful Granddaddy.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Norene Hudspeth, his daughter, Linda Sue Hudspeth, on September 30, 1994. the love of his life, Vona Lee, on May 24, 2010, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Those left to mourn are his son, John Hudspeth and wife Crescent of Brownfield; his daughter, Mary Lee Gunnels and husband Bobby of Hagerman, NM; the grandchildren, James Hudspeth and wife DeDee of Dumas, Carole Hale and husband Mike of Logan, NM, Andrew Gunnels and Terra of Brownfield, Robby Gunnels and Chelsea of Brownfield; great grandchildren, Evie Lou and Mikey Hale of Logan, Austin, Hunter, Audrey and Kadin Gunnels of Brownfield, Bailee, Braxtyn, and Haeven of Brownfield.
