Robert passed away Friday, September 5, 2008. He was born April 23, 1922, in Muldrow, Oklahoma to L.D. Sr. and Clara Laster Hamm. In 1929 Robert moved to the Wellman area and his family began their farming operation. In 1931 L.D. Sr. bought a quarter section of land, one mile northwest of Wellman. Part of the land was already in cultivation, but many acres of land had to be cleared of mesquite, bear grass, and cat claws. Robert, along with his brothers, used grubbing hoes and axes to clear the land. Early farming was done with teams of mules, pulling the machinery, until the late thirties and early forties. Robert continued to farm the original home site until his death. One of his joys was driving his grandchildren and great-grandchildren around the farm.

Robert attended Wellman schools until graduating at the age of sixteen, and then began farming fulltime for his father. He served in the Merchant Marines in the Pacific and following his release from duty, he returned to Wellman to continue farming.

He married Abbie Mozelle Singleton on September 13, 1941. She preceded him in death on December 21, 1983. Robert and Mozelle had four children.

Robert served on the Wellman School Board for 21 years, serving from 1948-1969. He farmed in Terry and Yoakum counties for over 70 years. Besides his love of farming, Robert was an avid fisherman, vegetable gardener, and a wonderful cook. Papa is best remembered for his famous steak chili and hot sauce.

Those left to cherish his memory are his four children; Karen Fails and husband Leon of El Paso, Scott Hamm and wife Frances of Wellman, Steve Hamm and wife Marsha of El Paso, Kim Kelcy and husband Gordon of Wellman; two brothers, Jack Hamm and Dick Hamm, both of Brownfield; sister-in-law, Mrs. L.D. "Babe" Hamm of Brownfield; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mozelle; his parents; two brothers, L.D. Hamm, Jr. and Mont Hamm.

The family will have visitation from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday at the Funeral Home.
