Funeral services for Ruth Thurman, 86, formerly of Brownfield will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 11am at First United Methodist Church in Brownfield, Texas with Jerry Joplin officiating. The viewing with the family will be on Monday, January 23rd from 6-8pm at the Brownfield Funeral Home. Interment will follow the funeral at the Terry County Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.

Mrs. Thurman passed away peacefully on January 21, 2012, in Fort Worth, Texas, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Thurman and her son, Dan Thurman.

She was born Ruth Warren to Thomas David Warren and Pearl Bass Warren on May 18, 1925; the youngest of seven brothers – Marvin, James, Dalton, Tom, Ollie, Frank, and Grady; and two sisters – Minnie Johnston and Mary Belle Warren. She was raised on the family farm outside of Brownfield and graduated from Union High School in 1943.

Ruth graduated from Draughon’s Business College in 1945 and set out for Long Beach, California shortly thereafter. During World War II, she worked as an Electrician’s Assistant in the Long Beach Shipyards.

Ruth returned to West Texas in 1946 where she met James Thurman. They married on August 28, 1947 in Brownfield, Texas. They were members of The First United Methodist Church, where Ruth sang beautifully in the choir, served in the Women’s Circle Group and participated in the Come Double Sunday School Class for many years. Ruth was also active in the Brownfield community, serving on the Terry County Election Board and the Terry County Grand Jury. She was a Girl Scout Leader, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and enjoyed being on stage with the Brownfield Players. Ruth was an active member of Eastern Star and bowled in a league for many years. Ruth also helped her life-long partner and husband, James with their farming business. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed fishing, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Thurman is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Becky Thurman of Georgetown, Texas; daughters, Pattie Cox of Fort Worth, Texas and Leslie Alexander of New York, New York; and her brother, Grady Warren of Lubbock, Texas.
Grandchildren are Sterling Cox, Matthew Cox, Amanda Cox Jeter and husband Will, Jay Thurman and his wife Diane, Beau Thurman and his wife Linda, Jordan Thurman and his wife Meagan and Lynsey Thurman; great-grandchildren, Thurman and Gentry Jeter,Haley, Macey, Emily and Lilly Thurman and Reagan and Courtney Thurman; Mrs. Thurman is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
