Sammy Barton Jones

Sammy Barton Jones passed away peacefully July 22, 2011. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the Brownfield Funeral Home Chapel.

Visitation with family will take place at Brownfield Funeral Home preceding the service, beginning at 1 p.m. Family visitation will continue following the service.

Sammy was born to Earl Edgar Jones and Ethel Mae Barton Jones on April 23, 1928 in Brownfield, Texas. Son of a pioneering family, his father founded Jones Theatres Inc. in Brownfield, TX. Sammy graduated from Brownfield High School in 1945 and received his Bachelor of Business degree from Texas Technological College in Lubbock, TX.

Sammy married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Evelyn Dungan on June 3, 1948. Sammy was the manager / owner of Jones Theatres, Inc. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Foundation of Motion Picture Pioneers and served in leadership for many other industry associations. Sammy served as a civic leader in Rotary Club, Brownfield City Council, Brownfield Chamber of Commerce and was active in many other community activities and organizations. He was also a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, where he faithfully served as Ruling Elder and in many other capacities.

After 52 years of making Brownfield their home, Sammy and Joyce moved to Plano, TX. in 2002 to be closer to their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Sammy later moved to Fort Worth, TX. in 2011.

Sammy was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joyce, in November 2010. He was also preceded in death by a brother; Bobby Glen Jones; two sisters, Earlene Jones Day and Evelyn Jones Singleton; a nephew, Scott Singleton; and a niece, Karen Jones Knox.

He is survived by his son, Tom Jones and wife, Brenda of Plano; his daughter, Tracy Blair and husband, Craig, of Fort Worth; Granddaughter, Amanda Fagala and her husband, Jeff of San Antonio; Grandson, Kevin Jones of Frisco; step grandchildren, Ashley Jackson and her husband Greg of Lubbock, Andrea and Nickolas Blair of Haslet; great-grandsons Drew, Zach, and Trent Fagala; and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the Fort Worth Center of Rehabilitation and Odyssey Hospice of Fort Worth for all their support during his final days.

Memorials may be made to Lewy Body Dementia Association, American Cancer Society, or charity of one’s choice.
