Wayne Irving Hughes

Wayne Irving Hughes, 84, of Lubbock and formerly of Brownfield passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2010 in Lubbock. Graveside services with military honors will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Terry County Memorial Cemetery located at 1761 CR 430 in Brownfield, TX with Pastor Beau Hughes officiating under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.

Wayne was born on February 18, 1926 on the family farm on the Brazos River to James Irving and Minnie Margaret Hughes. He moved to Munday, TX prior to entering the U.S. Army in 1944. After his honorable discharge in 1946, Wayne moved to Lubbock to work. He moved to Brownfield on December 1, 1948 where he was employed with General Telephone Company of the Southwest for over 32 years until his retirement in 1981. He married Martha "Monte" Lane of Muleshoe on January 10, 1953. They enjoyed traveling together. She preceded him in death in 1997. Wayne was a member of the VFW and the American Legion as well as a member of the bowling league of Brownfield; his "claim to fame" was bowling a 300 game on January 31, 1965. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Wayne is survived by 2 nephews, Gary Hughes of West Minster, TX and Jim Caughran of Lubbock; 2 nieces, Fayteen Chaffin of Spring, TX and Sonya Creel of Waxahachie and several great nieces and nephews.
