Archie Franklyn Dungan, Jr. passed away on May 14, 2014 in Lubbock, TX. A memorial service will be held at the Brownfield Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, May 24th at 10:30 AM.

Archie was born to Archie Franklin Dungan and Martha Ann Ticer Dungan on January 7, 1932 in Lubbock, Texas. He moved several times during the early part of his life due to his father’s work with Santa Fe Railroad. Before settling in Brownfield in 1941, he lived in Abernathy, Plainview, Happy, Ropesville, and Lubbock. Archie graduated from Brownfield High School in 1949. He attended Mount San Antonio College in Pomona, California.

Upon his return to Brownfield, Archie worked for Jones Theatres, Inc. and later worked for Gulf Wholesale Company. In 1952, he enlisted in the Army and served in the 17th Field Artillery, attached to the 8th Army during the Korean War. He was discharged with the rank of Corporal in 1954. Afterwards, he went to work for George P. Livermore Oil Company which later became a part of the Great Western Drilling Company and then became a part of Loffland Brothers Company, the largest drilling company in the world. His work took him many places, including Port Au Prince, Haiti; Nevada and Alaska. In the early 1960’s he drilled atomic test holes for the Atomic Energy Commission in Nevada. In 1968, he worked on the Prudhoe Bay, Alaska oil field project on the Arctic Coastal Plain, two miles from the Arctic Circle. This was the first oil field on the Alaskan mainland and the largest oil field in North America. Following his stint in the oil business, Archie worked for Jones Theatres, Inc. in the 1970’s and retired in Brownfield.

Archie will always be loved and remembered as a faithful friend, loving uncle, horse and rodeo enthusiast and avid Texas Longhorns football fan.

Archie is survived by his long-time love, Gisela Bench, of Brownfield, TX; nephew, Tom Jones and wife Brenda; niece, Tracy Blair and husband Craig; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nephews. He also leaves behind Gisela’s children, grandchildren, and many of his friends, all of whom he loved dearly.
