A Funeral service for Carrol Johnson will be held on Tuesday, September 22nd at 10:00 AM, at First Baptist Church Brownfield (chapel) with Minister Jerry Joplin, officiating. A Graveside service with military honors to follow at Terry County Cemetery.

Carrol Johnson was born to Wood and Sarah Johnson on July 23rd, 1931 at the Johnson Community, west of Brownfield in Terry County. He graduated from Brownfield High School in 1949.

He and JoAnne Dickson, also of Brownfield, were married and attended Baylor University together, both graduating in 1953. Following Baylor, Carrol continued his education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, earning a Master’s degree in New Testament Studies.

His pastoral ministry began at the Baptist Church in Paint Rock, Texas, followed by Immanuel Baptist Church in Brownfield. He then served 23 years as a Baptist Chaplain in the United States Air Force, stationed in Missouri, Vietnam, Texas, Puerto Rico, Nevada, Germany, and California, retiring in 1983. He returned to his beloved Terry County, making Brownfield his home in retirement, where he served as interim pastor for small churches in the area and later as Senior’s Minister at First Baptist Church, Brownfield.

In declining health, he and JoAnne moved to San Antonio, Texas, where they spent their final years together. Carrol died September 7th, 2026, at age 95.

Carrol’s greatest loves were his wife JoAnne, his sons Steve and Dan, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He cherished Terry County and the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. His interests were boundless—he could rebuild an engine, repair a watch, service an air conditioner, or overhaul a road grader with equal skill. He was an accomplished photographer and audiophile who built much of his own equipment, and for several years, he was a remarkably good snow skier.

Throughout his life, Carrol’s defining characteristic was his nature as both student and teacher. He learned voraciously and shared generously, always eager to impart knowledge to others. No matter his circumstances, teaching animated everything he did.

He is survived by his Sons: Steve of Casper, Wyoming, and Dan of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.
