Wanda "Mickey" Hansard

March 26, 1940 — September 6, 2020

With broken hearts yet strong faith in Lord Jesus and Heaven above, we announce the passing of our sweet mom, Wanda Lorene (Mickey) Hansard of Brownfield, TX.  After a brief battle with end-stage renal disease, Mickey passed away on September 6, 2020.  She was 80 years old.

Mickey was born to parents Tud and Fannie Armstrong in a home on the outskirts of Bowie, TX, on March 26, 1940, and was a graduate of the Class of 1958 at Munday High School.  She married J.L. Hansard on December 27, 1958, and enjoyed her home in Brownfield since that time.  She was a member of First Baptist Church Brownfield and loved attending her Sunday School class and worship service until her health declined.  Mickey knew and loved the Lord and made a point to lead her family to love the Lord as well. Mickey’s dream as a young woman was simply to have kids, and she lived that dream to the fullest.  She sacrificed repeatedly over the years to ensure her girls, Rhonda and Kelley, had what they needed.

Along with the financial sacrifices, she absolutely devoted her time and love, forming deep friendships with her girls while still expecting the very best behavior.  Discipline was important to Mickey, as she wanted her kids to live a life with respectful and loving behavior above all.  Mickey also showed her love through sewing for her girls.  She made many outfits for school and dresses for prom and band banquets, a gesture deeply appreciated by her girls.  Mickey made quilts, blankets, and Barbie clothes, many of which her great-granddaughters are still using with adoration.  She became a Mimi with the birth of Kelsey and Alex, and she showered them with love from Day 1.  These girls loved their Mimi to the ends of the earth, just as her great-grandchildren learned to do as well.

Mickey also loved sports.  She played basketball in high school and married a basketball player in J.L.  Mickey extended her passion for sports in creating the Brownfield Girls Softball League when her kids were pre-teens.  She served as president of the league and coached for many years.  Her intensity and strategies were contagious, as her players applied their skills aligned with the game plans and won many championships. Those games and after-game ‘huddles’ were the best of times with sweet friendships that have endured and memories that haven’t faded. Mickey absolutely adored her siblings, nieces and nephews, and friends.  Her sense of humor was enjoyed by all who knew her. Mickey adored the staff at Brownfield Rehab & Care Center and Dr. Chebib.  Our family deeply appreciates this extended family and the many doctors and nurses who provided top medical care along the way.

Mickey is survived by two daughters, Rhonda Hansard Duncan and Kelley Hansard; one son-in-law, Terry Duncan; two granddaughters, Kelsey Duncan Williams and Alex Duncan; one grandson-in-law, Mitch Williams; and three great-grandkids, Kambri, Kaycen, and Kreed Williams.  Mickey was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. Hansard, her parents, her 10 siblings, and several special nieces and nephews.

Mickey will lay in state at Brownfield Funeral Home for viewing Wednesday, September 9, 2020.  The celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2020, at Brownfield First Baptist Church.  Graveside services will immediately follow at Terry County Cemetery.  Pallbearers are nephews Ricky Albus, Dink Davis, and Bruce Yeager; grandson-in-law Mitch Williams; and friends Shelby Duncan and Kylen Willis.
